Changing mindsets in the face of a growing industry

Laws and attitudes towards gambling continue to evolve.

In 2018, the United States Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on states allowing sports betting.

This decision paved the way for the adoption of HB 2772 into Arizona law in 2021, which established rules for fantasy sports contests and event betting.

That same year, the state and the tribes renegotiated their compact game. Changes included allowing new casinos, adding more slots to existing casinos, and allowing more table games to be bet on.

Casino winners and employees aren’t the only ones benefiting from the growth of gambling.

Gambling had an economic impact of $4.75 billion on Arizona and supported 38,069 jobs in the state, according to a 2021 economic impact. study by the American Gaming Association. The tribal revenue sharing and tax impact was $691.4 million.

A 2021 investigation of the AGM found the number of Americans who said the industry is committed to responsible gaming increased by almost 40% since 2018.

Collection assistance

Of course, with more gambling comes more risk. In 2017, The Economist reported that adults in the United States lose $100 billion to gambling each year.

The National Council for Problem Gambling estimates that at least one million Americans have a gambling addiction.

A portion of gambling revenue funds the Arizona Problem Gambling Division, which provides information and resources to the public.

It runs a 24-hour helpline and SMS service. The helpline more than tripled from 20 in March 2021 to 62 in March 2022. The number of text messages doubled from 25 to 51 over the same period.

Another program allows people to ban themselves from casinos, called self-exclusion. The division also offers free informational presentations and grants to reduce problem gambling behavior among youth.
