Ignite Academy aims to help students with a new after-school program

The local United Way, with support from local agencies, is launching an after-school program to improve children’s math and literacy skills.

The new ‘Ignite Academy’ will provide additional help for children in grades 2-7 while providing comprehensive support for families as well.

“We know that math and literacy skills are critical indicators of future success, including more students graduating from high school and more graduates going on to post-secondary education,” said Jessica Sartori. , co-chair of the board of directors of ProsperUs and CEO of John McGivney. ProsperUs is a collective of community partners in Windsor-Essex whose goal is to provide a ‘Cradle to Career’ strategy to better serve children in Windsor and Essex County.

Ignite Academy will support 360 students across six program sites starting in September.

The program will be offered in Windsor and Leamington school communities, including General Brock, Begley, Immaculate Conception, St. James, St. Louis and Queen Elizabeth elementary schools.

The Ignite Academy is the first solution resulting from an “extensive community consultation process” with the goals of not only improving literacy and math skills, but also improving school attendance, increasing self-esteem students’ self-esteem and strengthen relationships with their peers.

“From these consultations, we are designing solutions made for Windsor-Essex that will allow families and children to get the support they need, when and how they need it, and to align resources to serve the community more effectively,” Sartori said.

The program will provide academic support, nutritional, recreational and cultural activities as well as mentorship, mental wellness, family success coaches, parent engagement and support for the diverse cultural needs of Windsor-Essex communities. .
