MThe elco Resorts & Entertainment Return to School Program offers colleagues who have left school early the opportunity to earn their high school diploma internally by undertaking formal education alongside their employment. The company was the first local integrated resort operator to launch its in-house back-to-school program in conjunction with Escola Secundária Luso-Chinesa de Luís Gonzaga Gomes in 2010 as part of its Human Development Program. It has since inspired other companies to adopt similar programs.

A dedicated back-to-school graduation ceremony was recently held for 20 colleagues who studied for their high school diplomas while working full-time at Melco. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Lawrence Ho, President and CEO of Melco, Ms. Ieong Weng Si, Vice-Principal of the Escola Secundária Luso-Chinesa de Luís Gonzaga Gomes and Professor Davis Fong, Director of the Institute for the study of commercial games from the University of Macao.
Special awards were also presented during the graduation ceremony, with 8 graduates receiving outstanding academic awards for achieving 85 points or more; 9 graduates receiving outstanding academic awards for achieving 80 or more points; 1 graduate receiving the Li Bai prize for the best result of the year in Chinese language; 2 graduates receiving the Lotus Prize for the best overall lower secondary achievement; and 1 graduate receiving the Lotus Award and Macau Foundation Award for Art Education for Senior High School.

A graduate of the Lotus Prize and the Macau Foundation Prize for High School Art Education, Ms. Xie Doushan said, “Thinking back to when school started, I was afraid that I couldn’t keep up. With the help of teachers and classmates and my continuous efforts, I gradually discovered the joy of learning. I am grateful to the company for providing such a positive learning environment for us. I also thank my teachers for their attentive coaching and the hard work of colleagues at Melco’s Learning Academy. Of course, I must also thank my family for their encouragement and support throughout the journey.
Another graduate of the back-to-school program and Lotus Prize recipient, Ms. Qiu Xuexia, added, “Three years have passed. When class schedules were impacted by the pandemic, our teachers kindly started teaching online, so I thank them for their dedication and consideration. It was a great honor for me to be rewarded on the opening day of the school. I want to thank everyone who supported me in my life and I also thank myself for my perseverance.
