Program “Chess at school”

Why in the news?

On November 6, 2022, Rajasthan Minister of Education, Dr. BD Kalla said during the inaugural ceremony of the chess competition under the 66th District School Sports in Bikaner that the ‘Chess in School’ would start from former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s birthday (November 19) in more than 60,000 public schools in the state and after that, chess will be played in schools on the third Saturday of each month on “bag-free day”.

  • Minister of Education, Dr. BD Kalla said that for the first time in the country, this initiative is going to be taken in Rajasthan, under which chess boards and other necessary materials will be procured through sports grants in over 60,000 schools across the state and children will master chess.
  • He said that for the first time chess was included in school sports. After that, district and state level chess competitions are held, in which the participating children will bring glory to Rajasthan in national and international chess events in times to come.
  • President of Permanent Lok Adalat Mahesh Sharma said that “Chess in School” would become the biggest media in the country in the promotion of the game of chess. He also talked about the organization of these competitions in the age group of ten and fourteen.
  • The competition coordinator, Senuka Harsh, informed that at the district level competition, children in the age group of 17 and 19 will compete in four categories. A state-level chess competition will also be held at the Ramesh English School in Bikaner from November 14-18. Teams from 33 districts in the state will participate.
