The International School of Beijing (ISB) has met the challenges and rewards of the future of education throughout our 35-year history. Through our personalized and hands-on L21 curriculum, our experienced and passionate faculty provide students with exceptional opportunities to develop as individuals and complete global citizens. ISB’s program and culture are founded on our core values of openness to the world, integrity, respect, balance, creativity and service. Our standards-based L21 curriculum draws on the best elements of international K-3 through 12 curriculum models.
From 2016-17, our PreK level will have a 50:50 Chinese-English dual language program that deepens our youngest learners’ connection to China and enhances their cognitive learning abilities. At our high school, ISB offers a full International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program and IB certificate options for students in grades 11 and 12, as well as Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Calculus and Chinese for 11th and 12th grades.
ISB is located on a 32-acre campus in Shunyi District, approximately 30 minutes from downtown Beijing and close to popular expat residential compounds. Two purpose-built sports domes sit side by side across 8,500 square meters. In addition, the ISB has four fully equipped gymnasiums (including one with a climbing wall); baseball and softball fields; two full-size grass soccer fields; and an aquatic center with a 25-meter pool and diving boards.
In 2015-2016, we opened six new flexible learning spaces that optimize 21st century learning, namely three “collaboratories”, two Maker Spaces and our well-equipped ISB Futures Academy. The ISB Futures Academy is an educational model designed to inspire creativity, develop problem-solving skills and effective communication, and encourage flexibility and cooperation. Currently offered to 7th and 8th graders, the ISB Futures Academy is set to expand to our high school in 2016-17.
Within our school’s main building are 12 state-of-the-art science labs, a student kitchen lab, a middle and high school visual arts wing, and elementary school art studios. Our Performing Arts Wing consists of a 600 seat theatre, Black Box theatre, rehearsal space and studio stage. The main school building also has two media libraries with over 82,000 volumes and over 160 magazine subscriptions. ISB supports an individual MacBook laptop program for each student in grades 2-12. A pharmaceutical grade air filtration system (H-14) ensures exceptionally high air quality in all of our indoor areas.
